Fawcett came a long way from her Corpus Christi, Texas roots. She started out acting in commercials (she was best-known as the Wella Balsam girl). From there, her popularity soared after she was named to the cast of "Charlie's Angels"В and the poster of her in a red bathing suitВ hit newsstands. The poster sold a record numberВ of copies-over 12 million.

Farrah Fawcett became the butt of late-night jokes when she appeared June 5, 1997, on "The Late Show with David Letterman"В mumbling and incoherent, causing some to speculate she was abusing drugs. She later claimed she was joking around with Letterman.

Farrah Strips Down for Playboy

Farrah Fawcett refused to pose nude throughout the 1970s and 1980s, so she caused a major stir when she appeared in the buff in the December 1995 issue of Playboy. The issue went on to become a bestseller of the 1990s, with more than four million copies sold worldwide.

When she was 50,В Fawcett posed for the July 1997 Playboy. It also became a bestseller.

Before there was "The Rachel," there was "The Farrah." Fawcett's winged hair became a phenomenon that inspired copycats throughout the 1970s and '80s. Fawcett was famous for her role as Jill Munroe in the TV series "Charlie's Angels." But her tenure with the show lasted only a year.

On October 4, 2006, it was reported that Farrah Fawcett was suffering from anal cancerВ and was undergoing treatment, including chemotherapy and surgery.

The cancer reportedly went into remission, but on May 17, 2007, it was reported to be back. Apparently, it had metastasized to her liver.

Despite conflicting reports in April 2009 that Fawcett was rushed to the hospital in critical condition,В her producer, Craig Nevius,В assured the press that Fawcett was "not at death's door."

"She's on the mend and will be going home very shortly," said Nevius. "She's doing fantastic. Her fight goes on… She's not going anywhere anytime soon."

"She remains in good spirits with her usual sense of humor. She's been in great shape her whole life and has an incredible resolve and an incredible resilience," said her doctor, Lawrence Piro, on April 6, 2009.

Fawcett died on June 25, 2009, at age 62 with her longtime love Ryan O'Neal by her side.
