It's no secret that eyebrows are one of the most important features on our face. We all have different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures of brows-which means they can vary greatly, giving a distinct personality to a face. Still, there are things that are universal, like taking care of them. Eyebrow tinting can make a huge difference, but what's the best way to tint and shape them? Should we have our brows professionally done or try to do this ourselves? We chatted with Benefit Cosmetics Global Brow Expert, Jared Bailey, to answer a few frequently asked questions.02 of 04
How Often Should You Tint Your Eyebrows?В Rosdiana CiaravoloВ / Contributor / Getty Images
This question is raised often, as the answers are less than consistent. Each hair type takes to tint differently, and no, it's not always the same timeline as having your hair colored.
Here's what Jared Bailey had to say:В
"A brow tint is the must-have service for anyone looking to get fuller-looking frames for their face.В Every brow is filled with soft & fine vellus hair that, when tinted, can create a fuller, thicker brow instantly.В In addition to adding depth and dimension to a look, brow tinting can also add length to the end of a brow, where our hairs tend to be lighter and finer.В Over the course of three to four weeks the tint slowly begins to fade away, so you don't have to worry about a messy grow out period like you do with hair color."
After you've tinted your brows, using a product to groom them and keep them in place is key. Pomades and brow gels (we love Milk Makeup's Kush Brow Gel, $18,) are ideal if you have thicker, coarser brows with hair that tends to not lay flat. Brush the pomade through the brow in an upward motion to help hair look more full and also stay put. If you don't want to add any color, you can use aВ brow gel just to help with stray hairs.В When opting to use a powder to fill in your brows, apply it in an upward motion with an angled brow brush to mimic the look of hair-like strokes. We recommend Urban Decay's Double Down Brow, which retails for $29.03 of 04
What Color Should My Eyebrows Be?Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin Spring/Summer 2018/Joern Pollex/Getty Images
Should you match your brows to your hair color, or do they need to be lighter or darker to stand out? We asked Bailey about this, and he told us:
"Just a hint of custom brow tint will thicken up the look of thin or patchy eyebrows. For a more natural look, I recommend a color that mimics the deepest shade found in the hair on your head and carry that color throughout the entire length of the brow. This will give the brows a wash of fullness. For a little more definition, I would take it one to two shades deeper than the base tone of your hair.В It's the perfect way to add a bit more exuberance to any frame."
Over time our brows can shed naturally, and we tend to lose our hair. If you feel like you've over-plucked your brows or that they're thinning out, there are ways to help stimulate growth to the hair follicle to help eyebrows grow back.В04 of 04
What's the Best Tint to Use to Dye Eyebrows at Home?В Courtesy of Baebrow
If you're going to try a DIY brow tint at home, there are a few things to keep in mind. Bailey wasn't too keen on the idea, but gave us some suggestions anyway.В
"Some things are best left to the pros… however, if you're going to DIY your own brow tint, look for products that are specially made for the face and eye area. Before applying the tint, always make sure to protect the skin from staining with a thin layer of Vaseline or night cream. And always remember to wipe away some of the tint to check the color so it doesn't become too intense."
We like the simplicity of theВ Instant Tint, $20, from BaeBrow.
