It's not as if I'm against body hair, not by any means. I'm a believer in "your body, your choice" and everything that phrase encompasses. But for my particular body, my choice is to remove most of my body hair. It just makes me feel good-more confident, super soft, and kind of sleek like a dolphin. I've considered laser hair removal. It sounds like a dream once it's completed, but to be honest, the time commitment has kept me tied to my razor (and a good waxing spot, my particular favorite is Stripped Ministry of Waxing in NYC). I was pretty positive I'd continueВ shaving my armpits forever until I caught wind of Completely Bare'sВ Pit Stop Hair Inhibiting Deodorant ($11).В
In this case, "hair-inhibiting" refers toВ the formula'sВ plant extracts. They work by slowing down cell growth while also providing an anti-inflammatory effect on your skin. See, it decreases keratinocyte proliferation to reduce your hair follicle count, decrease the amount of hair, and all the while slowing your hair regrowth. I'll admit, I was skeptical. I wouldn't be a beauty editor if I wasn't. There are so many products out there that claim to change your life, andВ only a curated selection actually do. But I was game to try it. What did I have to lose? Well, nothing except my armpit hair, I suppose. Plus, the blend of ingredients had already been tested of Completely Bare's two other hair-inhibiting products-one for yourВ bodyВ and another for yourВ face. I decided to give the deodorant the benefit of the doubt and take it for a monthlong spin along my underarms.В
Now, 30 days later and a lot less hairy, I can honestly say it works. That doesn't mean I've stopped shaving altogether (I told you, I like to feel sleek like a dolphin), but I've significantly cut down to the point where I barely feel the need. To be transparent, I've never been a particularly hairy person by nature. My armpit hair took until after my 15th birthday to come in, and even before trying this product, the hair under there is fairly sparse. But here's what went down.
The first week, the only difference I noticed was in the softness of my skin (which is still positive). The product is formulated with coconut oil to soften, hydrate, and nourish your underarm skin, as it's generally pretty neglected.В Aloe leaf juice is incorporated to soothe and calm even super-sensitive skin, whileВ also imparting necessary antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. So, yes, my armpit skinВ has been living in the lap of luxury. But I still saw no difference in the hair. That is, until about week three. Suddenly, the sparse hair began to get even sparser. It was honestly barely visible to anyone who wasn't placing their gaze a few inches from my armpit. Rather than a few times I week, I cut back to shaving my armpits only once per week. By the end of the monthlong experience, IВ began only shaving once every other week. It's pretty miraculous, IMHO. I still switch off between this deodorant and my favorite, DoveВ Go Fresh Cool Essentials Anti-Perspirant Deodorant ($5), because I love the cucumber scent and it really limits any lingering not-so-pleasant scents. But that being said, I'm into it and I think you will be too.В
