10 Steps to Create the Perfect Bath

You can make your own spa treatments at home quite easily. Here's how to create an amazing bath in just a few steps.

First, Create Ambiance

All spas have ambiance. To create yours, try lighting candles and placing them around the bathroom. It's nice to have something to do, as well. I have caught up on Netflix while in the tub (I cart in a chair and prop my laptop on it), I've read books and magazines (these do tend to get wet, so keep a hand towel nearby), and I've listened to music. Do whatever pleases you most.

And don't forget your beverage of choice. Hot tea, a glass of wine, even hot cocoa are all great comfort drinks while taking a bath.

Most importantly, kindly ask your family to give you privacy. The biggest ambiance buzzkill would be kids beating on the door wanting attention.

Start With a Cup of Bath Salts

I like to pour in unscented bath salts or Epsom salts in my bath. Bath salts are great for sore muscles. I like them because I think they make the bath water feel somehow softer.

Add Some Sort of Bubbles (Mr. Bubble Works!)

I like a great bubble bath. I've even been known to go out and buy Mr. Bubble when on vacation in a B&B with a great large tub. The secret to getting the bubbles to properly bubble is to pour the bubblesВ slowly into the rushing water.

A Few Drops of Essential Oils for Scent

I like to keep essential oils on hand for baths. At least 10 drops should scent up your bath nicely. Lavender is my favorite and especially great for putting you in a sleepy mood,В but rose and geranium are also lovely.В

Or, Skip the Essential Oils, & Try a Bath Oil

If I'm not putting in essential oils, I'll use Dr. Hauschka's Aromatherapy Bath Oil, which a friend gave me years ago and I've been buying ever since. I find itВ protects my skin from the bad effects of hot bathwater.

Buy Dr. Hauschka at any health food store or online directly from Dr. Hauschka.

Don't Forget Something for Your Head

I used to have a plastic bath pillow that suction-cupped onto my tub. You can also roll up a hand towel to put under your neck to make your spa bath more luxurious.

Spread a Face Mask on While You Bathe

This is going all out, but for the ultimate spa experience at home, spread on a faceВ mask. Let it sit for 10 minutes on your face and then wash it off with a warm washcloth in the tub. Divine.

Pull on Those Bath Mitts

After soaking for a good 15 minutes or so (I always let more water in as the tub cools), I like to pull on bath mitts and give myself a good, vigorous scrub with a body scrub made from coconut oil and brown sugar that I make myself. You won't believe how soft and supple your skin will feel afterward.

Step Out Into a Great Big Fluffy Towel and a Fabulous Robe

Years ago, I invested in fluffy white towels because I love how luxurious it feels to towel off with a good towel. I also invest in wonderful robes. Otherwise, it's not really a spa experience at home, is it?

Slather Yourself in Moisturizer

Hot water will take all the oils out of your skin. You need a moisturizer to lock in whatever moisture is left.
